A beautiful maternity session in Deer Lake Park with tips to make the most of your maternity session

“Life is a flame that is always burning itself out,

but it catches fire again every time a child is born.”

– George Bernard Shaw

Pregnancy is something that should be truly celebrated. What could be more beautiful than bringing another life into this world?

If you are an expecting mother, CONGRATULATIONS! You are carrying a blessing inside of you, woman! The nine months may seem like a long wait; but before you know it, it’s over and you have a newborn in your arms.

If you want to fully celebrate the exciting stage of carrying your child in your womb, having a Maternity Session is something you might want to consider. Every step of your pregnancy journey is precious; and documenting it with the help of professionals will make things easier with awesome results!

Here are some tips for having a Maternity Session in Vancouver:

1. Set it at the right time

Maternity Photoshoots are recommended to be scheduled between 33-36 weeks of your pregnancy. It’s the best time to show off that beautiful baby bump.

2. Pick a location depending on your vision (and the weather condition)

If you are a nature gal, then definitely your vision will have something to do with the outdoors. The beach, the lake, the endless field of tulips, the mountains, the vineyard, even the nearby park   ̶ they are all great outdoor locations for spring and summer. By now you’re probably imagining yourself wandering through rows of lavender blooms, or strolling along the shore during sunset. But remember, you live in Vancouver! Weather is eeeverythingggg! So plan it carefully and prepare for a bit of travel to get to that perfect spot.

On the other hand, if you want a more intimate photoshoot, you can opt to do it indoors in the comforts of your own home. You get more control with the schedule, less things to plan for, and more clothes and props at your disposal. You can also choose to do your photoshoot in a private/public location, such as a hotel, indoor garden, museum, art gallery, historical building, or even your place of worship. The great thing about an indoor photoshoot is that you can schedule it anytime regardless of the weather and the current season.

3. Wear whatever makes you feel beautiful

By beautiful, we also mean comfortable for you and your baby. Even if the dress is stunning, if you’re too self-conscious wearing it, it will only result in you looking hella awkward.

Wear something that makes you feel confident and beautiful. Those delightful curves will be with you only for a few months, so opt for something that highlights that baby bump. You could also wear matching outfits with the dad-to-be for a totally cute photo sesh.

Pretty clothes are nice, but you can also play around with lingerie or soft, delicate fabrics. You could also showcase your bare belly or a silhouette of your body for that dramatic effect.

4. Props can make it more interesting

Baby shoes, baby clothes, flowers, balloons, or even an image of your baby’s ultrasound can all be great elements in your maternity photos. You can even bring in your hubby or your other kids for a special guest appearance!

5. Just let your joy shine through

If you’re not sure which pose looks flattering with that enormous preggy belly, that’s okay. Just trust your photographer and let her guide you. The only thing you need to do is to relax and have fun with it! Let your happiness as a soon-to-be mama shine through by being vulnerable enough to show your emotions.

As a Vancouver lifestyle photographer, I love seeing those genuine moments where a woman’s inner and outer beauty is captured in photography. It is my blessing to witness these moments and immortalize them for future generations to see. Congratulations to all expecting mommies!
